Golden Egg Farms' Media Release on the Government's Announcement to Deregulate
August 14, 2003
Golden Egg Farms, the Statutory Authority for the egg industry, has today received notification that State Cabinet has approved the deregulation of the Egg Industry no later than 1 July 2007.
The Government has said details of the deregulation process will be finalised after receiving advice from the National Competition Council on the WA’s National Competition Policy payments.
Chief Executive Phil Steel said the organisation now looked forward to receiving details of the transition arrangements, especially on how they will impact on egg producers and consumers.
“With the market-oriented structure of the industry in Western Australia, there have been substantial positive developments under the existing system,” said Mr Steel.
“For some years now, WA producers have had the ability to distribute and market their produce however they choose. GEF as the Statutory Authority has far from operated as a monopoly.
“What is important, however, is that the transition to full deregulation happens in an orderly manner with producers given proper economic consideration and consumers continuing to receive the stable supply and price advantages they enjoy.”
In the deregulated market, GEF will continue as a packaging, distributing and marketing organisation for WA egg producers.
