Approximately 35% (volume) of eggs sold in Australia supermarkets are free range. Golden Eggs free range farms are located in the Perth outer metropolitan area. We began farming in this area in the mid 1980's. Our flock has increased in size over time as demand for free range eggs increased.
What is free range?
Our free range eggs come from free range farms that are third party audited. There is no variation in nutritional content of eggs laid in a free range environment, when compared to eggs produced in alternative laying system. The only difference is with hen's environment. These hens have the freedom to move around outdoors during daylight hours, whilst their water, food and nests are housed inside sheds.
For our farms the range area is at least one square metre per bird or one hectare per 10,000 birds.
The provision of a range area allows the birds to be outside if they wish, to scratch around and to dust bathe.
